ISLAMABAD:
The Afghan government and Taliban are poised to hold face-to-face talks within the next few days following pressure by Pakistan and other foreign stakeholders.
The two sides were in contact since a long time but this is the first time they will sit across the table to discuss future of Afghanistan, according to officials.
US President Barack Obama’s point-man for the region travelled to Islamabad and held crucial talks with authorities on Tuesday.
Daniel F Feldman, special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, met army chief General Raheel Sharif at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi.
According to Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the regional situation was discussed during the meeting.
Major General Asim Saleem Bajwa (ISPR chief) said that the US Special envoy appreciated Pakistan’s role for peace and stability in Afghanistan.
