  • SC seeks police report till 24th in Christian couple’s lynching and murder case

The Supreme Court (SC) Monday directed Punjab government to constitute a three-member prosecution team to assist the police in Kot Radha Kishan Christian couple lynching case and has sought report from police till March 24 on the action taken against the accused.

As a two-member SC bench took up the case for hearing, court remarked it will decide on next hearing if a judicial commission was needed to probe into the matter.

Justice Dost Muhammad also expressed reservations over the police performance saying, “Police could not fix responsibility even after arresting 90 accused. Had an SP been murdered, the police would have had all 90 arrested men confess the murder. The Christian couple was burnt alive in the presence of police but it did not take action.”

The police filed its report in the court and said that action was being taken against the police officers responsible. The incident took place due to announcement made by the local clerics in the mosques, the report said, adding that clerics had incited the people that the couple had allegedly desecrated the Quran. People in large number assembled over it and it was beyond the control of a few policemen to control them, the police said, asking the court to grant more time as a trial of the accused was under way.

During the hearing, the family members of Christian couple told the court about the life threats being hurled at them. The court ordered the police to provide complete security to them.
