124 profiteers find, 12 arrested

Karachi Commissioner Shoaib Ahmed Saddiqui said on Monday that a crackdown was continued against profiteers across the city.

The crackdown was launched against the sellers of milk, vegetable, meat, fruit, chicken, and other commodities who were selling goods above government rates. He said that in the latest crackdown, 124 shopkeepers were fined and a total of Rs 124,500 fine was recovered from them.

Crackdowns were launched in different areas of the city that included Liaqatabad, Gulberg, Nazimabad, North Nazimabad, New Karachi, Murad Memon, Model colony, Shah Faisal, Saddar, Aram Bagh, Civil Lines, Garden, Harber, Jamsheed Quarter, Gulzar-e-Hijri, Orangi Town, Baldia Town, Landhi, Airport, Malir and Korangi.

Siddiqui said that the crackdowns were launched by assistant commissioners in the city in which 52 milkmen, 29 shopkeepers of general commodities, 12 vegetable sellers, 12 fruit sellers, one flour seller, and 26 chicken sellers were fined for selling essential items at excessive prices, while 12 profiteers were arrested due to continuous violation.

The commissioner said the profiteers would not be allowed to plunder people. He said campaign launched against profiteers would continue till they ensured that the commodities were sold at fix rate.
