Emma Watson on HeForShe: ‘I knew the naked pictures threat was a hoax’

Emma Watson has revealed that she knew a threat to publish ‘naked pictures’ of her was a hoax-claiming such pictures didn’t exist, according to The Independent.

Speaking about her initiative HeForShe on International Women’s Day, the actress said she became the target of hackers claiming to have access to her most intimate pictures.

“It was a wake-up call to people around me in particular who didn’t think we had a problem with gender equality in Great Britain,” she said.

Watson spoke at the event, streamed live on Facebook, about the importance of men getting involved in gender equality.

“People associate feminism with hate – with man hate – and that’s really negative,” she said. “I think that’s why women became reluctant to use the word.

“I don’t think that’s what it’s about at all – it’s something very positive,” she added. “We’ve come back to what the actual definition is – equality politically, culturally, socially and economically.

“Men believe it’s a women’s word, but it’s for men as well. If you stand for equality, you’re a feminist – I’m sorry to tell you.”

Watson’s Facebook page has more than 30 million likes, but she said just 200,000 men have signed up to her pledge for gender equality.
