Sahaara, Serena highlight plight of Pakistani women

The participants of an interactive session held in connection with International Women’s Day in Islamabad have demanded the government declares education emergency for women in Pakistan.

The Sahaara Group, in collaboration with Serena Hotels, marked International Women’s Day by celebrating and highlighting successful female activists, entrepreneurs and leaders in the Pakistani community.

The interactive session captivated audience with Dr Farzana Bari, Kishwar Naheed, Fiza Farhan, Mehnaz Aziz and Samina Baig among the panellists.

Commenting over the issue of a nine-year-old girl from Charsadda, who was sold to a 55-year-old man in return for three goats, widely respected human rights activist, Dr Farzana Bari, said that women in Pakistan do not have any respect and value.

“Women of Kohistan are still waiting for justice and domestic violence has become global issue now a days, we are trying hard to stop it, but women should join hands collectively to stop domestic violence,” she added.

Children’s Global Network Pakistan Founding Director Mehnaz Aziz revealed that 98 per cent of teachers working in private schools of Punjab were women, which shows that women have a major role in nation building.

Aziz said that women of Balochistan and FATA are deprived of schools while a similar situation could be witnessed in remote areas of Rawalpindi and other cities. The government should declare women education emergency in the country, she demanded.

A craft bazar was also held after the program featuring handicrafts by female artisans and workers across Pakistan.
