MOMBASA:

The US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), an agency tasked with combating drug smuggling and use within USA, has claimed that it plans to re-open its office in Karachi, Pakistan.

DEA wants to work with its agents in Nairobi and with Pakistani authorities, according to reports.

Not only is the DEA the lead agency for domestic enforcement of Controlled Substances Act, is also has the sole responsibility for coordinating and pursuing U.S. drug investigations abroad.

Britain, which estimates it is the destination for about 20 percent of the heroin shipped through east Africa, has also stepped up its presence in the region.

“Now it is not just about us here in Kenya,” Hamisi Masa, the head of Kenya’s elite Anti-Narcotics Unit, told foreign agencies. “The whole world is concerned.”
