Audit points out fraudulent sale of railway tickets worth Rs 19.55 million

Massive financial irregularities, embezzlement and misappropriation of funds in the accounts of formations of Pakistan Railway have been pointed out by the audit in the audit report for the year 2013-14.

The audit report revealed that fittings worth Rs 37.27 million were found deficit in coaching and goods stock of Lahore division Mechanical Department, Karachi Divisional Mechanical Engineer and Rawalpindi Divisional Mechanical Engineer.

The Railway authorities were directed to investigate the matter, fix responsibility and recover the loss from the defaulters.

The report disclosed that material valuing Rs 34.37 was found short in various offices of the Pakistan Railway (PR) and no documentary evidence regarding settlement of stock sheet was provided to audit.

The audit report reflects that a sum of Rs 27.64 million were embezzled by the commercial and civil staff with showing tickets worth Rs 19.55 million to have been returned to stores through fake receipts but these were sold out and amount was pocketed and Rs 7.88 were collected from lessees but only Rs 3.86 were deposited in station earnings.

Audit pointed out that railway authorities failed to safeguard valuable assets valuing Rs 13.61 million as military took away railway track along with other material from Kala Dina loop hole without making any payment. This amounts to theft of material, report added.

The report transpired that railway had to suffer huge monetary loss due to late remission of daily cash of Rs 4.04 million. Audit recommended that timely collection of railway revenue be ensured to avoid loss.
