ISLAMABAD-

The federal and district magistrates were sent notices by the Islamabad High Court (IHC), seeking their replies on the detention orders of the alleged mastermind of Mumbai attacks of 2008.

Justice Noorul Haque heard the petition challenging Lakhvi’s detention and issued notices to the magistrates.

Lakhvi’s counsel Advocate Rizwan Abbasi contended that it was the third time his client had been issued with the detention orders.

The court sought replies from the district and federal magistrates and adjourned the hearing to March 5.

Lakhvi Was detained under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) following his post-arrest bail granted by an anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Dec 18 last year.

New Delhi strongly condemned the bail decision and Pakistan announced to appeal against it. Soon after, Lakhvi was detained under the MPO.

On December 29, the IHC suspended detention orders of the accused. He was then rearrested over a six-and-a-half-year-old case of kidnapping.

He remains jailed at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail.

Lakhvi is among the seven prime suspects charged with planning and orchestrating the Mumbai attack that killed 166 people.

Lakhvi, the operational head of the banned Laskhar-e-Taiba (LT), is accused of being one of the key planners of the attack.

DETAINED IN ‘LUXURY’

A BBC report on Sunday revealed that Lakhvi and his six jailed comrades enjoy luxury jail time with several rooms at their disposal and the jailer’s permission to have a television, mobile phones and access to internet, as well as dozens of visitors a day.

“He [Lakhvi] can receive any number of guests, any time of day or night, seven days a week,” the report quoted one jail official as saying.

The report added that his visitors are not even required to identify themselves to jail authorities.
