Anti-encroachment drive faces aggression: vehicle burnt, 7 injured

Some miscreants set on fire deputy director anti-encroachment Korangi’s vehicle and few cabin shops on road in Qayumabad. Five anti-encroachments staff members and two policemen also injured when protest erupted out against anti-encroachment drive on Friday.

The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) anti-encroachment force had to leave the operation against encroachments in the middle after violent protest was triggered against them in the area besides pelting of stones, aerial-firing and physical violence.

Deputy Director Anti-Encroachment Korangi Naseem-ul-Ghani remained safe but his vehicle was set on fire. Director Anti-Encroachment Mazhar Khan told PPI that around 70 per cent of the work had been completed, while Rangers were being awaited to complete the whole operation in the area.

“Several patharas, cabin shops and other illegal structures were removed with the help of anti-encroachment staff and police; however, fierce protest halted the progress,” he said.

Fire department sources told that some furniture, a motorbike silencer shop and a vehicle was burnt to ashes near a graveyard in Qayumabad. “The fire was controlled with the help of two fire tenders after a struggle of two and half an hour,” the sources said. Additional Deputy Commissioner Waseemuddin and Naseem-ul-Ghani were also present on the occasion.
