The Agricultural Statistics Journal of 2012-13 published by Federal Ministry of National Food Security and Research has revealed a drastic reduction in fodder crops with a reduction of 22.2 percent in the area of fodder from 1995-96 to 2012-2013 as also a reduction of 2.25 per cent in yield per hectare. On the other hand, cattle and buffaloes have increased from 1996-2006 by 30.9 and 25.8 per cent respectively in a period of 10 years. These figures indicate a negative impact on milk and meat production from bovines that ought to be taken serious note of by the authorities.
Since a long time fodder crops have not been paid due attention by the agriculture department as it has focused attention mainly on food and cash crops while neglecting feed and fodder crops. The only increase that has been seen is in the maize production by efforts of private sector by introducing hybrid varieties which has sustained the poultry industry in the country. It is time that due attention is paid to feed and fodder crops. The neglect of this area would spell disaster with increased cost of production of meat and milk with a narrowed base of feed and fodder supply envisioned in the future.
