The Supreme Court on Thursday suspended sentence awarded to former interior minister Rahman Malik in a case pertaining to car theft.

The three-member bench of the apex court headed by Justice Mian Saqib Nisar comprising Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan and Justice Umar Ata Bandial heard Rahman Malik’s appeal against the sentence by NAB court.

Rahman Malik’s lawyer Ali Zafar argued that his client was in London due to a murder threat at the time of sentence. He was sentenced by NAB in his absence, he prayed the court to quash the sentence.

After hearing the view of the NAB, the Court suspended the sentence and sent the case back to the trial court for re-investigation. NAB had filed a reference against Rahman Malik in 1996.
