IHC making it count!

Islamabad High Court (IHC) has issued notice to secretaries of finance and statistics, Council of Common Interests (CCI) chairman and chief election commissioner (CEC) for not holding new population census and sought reply from them within two weeks.

IHC comprising Justice Athar Minullah took up for hearing a petition filed by a citizen seeking holding of population census Monday.

Yasir Chaudhry counsel for the petitioner told the court new population census has not been conducted despite passage of 17 years in the country. On the other hand Local Bodies (LB) polls and by polls are being held throughout the country. Provinces could not get their rights for want of new population census and it is not even known to government that Pakistan total population is what and how many people expire in a year and population is increasing at what rate.

He further argued that population census was held 17 years before in the country and later neither the government nor CCI has taken notice of it and no strategy is in sight in this respect.

The court remarked, “No orders can be passed without hearing the stance of two sides nor can be decision given. The decision will be pronounced when the view point of other parties comes before the court.
