Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sindh Ghulam Hyder Jamali said on Monday that the crime rate in the city has significantly declined and it will be brought down to zero level.
Speaking at a luncheon hosted in honour of media persons at CPO, the IGP said that the Sindh police was committed to eradicating crime in Karachi and other parts of Sindh. He said that the main focus of the provincial police was on eliminating terrorism from the region.
He said target killing, street crimes and kidnapping for ransom, had significantly declined in the metropolis after he took over as IGP Sindh some seven months back.
He said that in interior Sindh, kidnapping for ransom cases were at an all time high when he took over. Khairpur district had a great number of kidnapping for ransom cases while Shikarpur was on second number in such cases.
Jamali said: “With the hectic efforts and solid actions [taken] by police, the kidnapping for ransom cases have reached zero level in Khairpur. However, there are some challenges in Shikarpur. There is also [a] significant decline in crime cases in Hyderabad, Badin, Mirpurkhas and Nawabshah.”
He said that the Sindh police would soon establish a Citizens Service Centre in Karachi so as to resolve complaints and other issues faced by citizens. He said that a large number of criminals, terrorists, target killers and dacoits had been killed during his tenure and criminals are now on the run.
He said that street crimes are still a challenge in Karachi because of the huge population. Now a system has been introduced to register people coming from other areas. Under this system, an estate agent has been bound to register tenants and give their bio-data to police.
He added, “The target killings in Karachi had reduced from an average of 6-7 persons to 2.5 persons per day.” The cases of kidnapping for ransom, which were 23 in Karachi and 45 in the interior Sindh when he took over, had been brought down to two cases each in Karachi and Sindh.
The significant decline in crime rate has occurred due to swift and strong actions taken by police in coordination with intelligence agencies and rangers, he concluded.
