GB forms special police unit for mountaineers’ security

The Gilgit-Baltistan government has formed a highly trained police unit to provide security to climbers who visit the area for scaling different peaks, said GB Inspector General Police Zafar Iqbal Awan while talking to media persons after handing over special kits for the “High Altitude Police Unit” to SP Diamir on Sunday.

The IGP said that as an initial step, a highly trained High Altitude Unit comprising 150 Jawans has been formed. He said the strength of the High Altitude Police Unit will be increased in phases to ensure security of the climbers.

He said the special unit was required to perform duty in extreme weather and at high altitude and special kits were required for the personnel to secure them from snow related diseases. He said the officials of the special unit have been given training in hiking and snow related sports. He said personnel of the special unit would also participate in Skating competition at Naltar next year.
