Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid urges promotion of mother tongue

Minister for Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage Senator Pervaiz Rashid on Saturday underlined the need to promote and uplift mother tongue with an aim to deepen and enrich knowledge of the nation.

Speaking at a ceremony held at Pakistan Academy of Letters in connection with International Mother Tongue Day, the minister said that Urdu being a national language was indeed a treasure trove of knowledge adding that national and mother languages play important role in development of literature. He emphasised culture cannot be promoted by adopting other languages.

The minister pointed out that mother language was the most powerful instrument of preserving and developing national heritage. He said that a nation deprived of its mother tongue could not make notable progress in any field of development.

“When a nation is deprived of its mother tongue, it ceases to attain any major development. It is perhaps due to this reason that the nations around the globe have started to observe International Mother Tongue Day,” he maintained.

Rashid said that if people start running affairs of life in their own language then several people could be found, who might not have educational degrees but they could contribute to national progress.

The ceremony was attended by prominent literary figures and analysts from around the country. They also highlighted the vital role of mother language in national uplift and floated several proposals for its promotion.

Earlier, the minister planted a sapling on the premises of Pakistan Academy of Letters.
