On the directive of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, the federal government has announced to release Rs 100 million for treatment of PIMS’ doctor Shahid Nawaz Malik in a foreign country.

Dr Malik, the head of the PIMS Cardiology Department, was shot in the head by unidentified assailant, while coming out the hospital last Wednesday. Since then, Dr Malik is in critical condition, as the bullet could not be retrieved even after he was shifted to the Combine Military Hospital (CMH).

Hospital sources said that doctors have declared Dr Malik ‘brain dead’, but they were reluctant to share the information with public. A source at the PIMS said that Dr Malik was in still comma and he had to be shifted to the CMH, as CT Scan machine at the PIMS was not working.

PIMS neurosurgeon Dr Khaliquz Zaman has already indicated that Dr Malik was brain dead after the bullet pierced through his head before it stuck in the brain. The hospital sources said that it was of no use sending Dr Malik to a foreign country for treatment, as he has already been declared brain dead by doctors.

Meanwhile, hospital and local administrations have decided to beef up security at the hospital.

Sources said that at a meeting held recently, it was decided that private security guards would be hired on an urgent basis and around 25 to 30 security guards will perform duty on top of the hospital building round the clock.

It was also decided that the boundary wall of the hospital will be raised to eight-foot and barbwires would be erected on it.

According to the sources, walkthrough gates and CCTV cameras would also be installed at the main entrance and other sensitive areas to ensure foolproof security at the hospital.

A separate monitoring room will also be established to keep an eye on activities on the hospital premises.

The sources further said that female security guards would be hired for the hospital’s Maternity Centre and Children’s Ward. The newborns will be passed through a camera before they were handed over to the parents, the sources said.
