No militant outfit spared in Zarb-e-Azb, COAS tells US team

Pakistan Army chief General Raheel Sharif on Wednesday assured a US congressional delegation that Pakistan has no favourites in the war against terrorism and that Operation Zarb-e-Azb is targeting all militant groups in North Waziristan Agency.

Talking to the visiting US congressional delegation led by Senator Jack Reed — a ranking member of the Senate’s Armed Services Committee, Gen Sharif said that networks of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and other militants groups have been completely dismantled in North Waziristan and a large area has been cleared.

During the meeting, security situation along the Pak-Afghan border also came under discussion and the US delegation was told that Pak-Afghan forces are conducting coordinated operations against militant hideouts and significant progress has been made in such operations.

Gen Raheel also took the US delegation into confidence over Tuesday’s trip to Kabul and told Senator Reed that cooperation between Islamabad and Kabul is growing in regard to security and countering terrorism.

The security situation in Afghanistan also came under discussion during the meeting.

The US senator appreciated Pakistan’s role in counter-terrorism efforts and assured full cooperation with Pakistan.
