Faiz paid tribute on 104th birthday

Renowned poet and writer Faiz Ahmed Faiz waged a war through his pen against extremism, inhumanity and social injustice, and highlighted the issues of the oppressed.

This was stated by the speakers here on Thursday at a conference organised by the Pakistan Academy of Letters (PAL) to celebrate the 104th birthday of the legendary poet and writer.

The conference was presided over by Senator Aitzaz Ahsan, while Minister Counsellor for Public Affairs Embassy of the United States of America Thomas M. Leary was the chief guest.

PAL Chairman Qasim Bogio, Majlis-e-Faiz Chairman Ahmed Faiz Malik Muhammad Iqbal, Educationist Prof Sameena Yasmeen, Dr Ghazanfar Mehdi and other intellectuals, poets, and writers, also attended the conference and paid tribute to Faiz.

They shared some pleasant memories about Faiz Ahmed Faiz and described how he faced problems in his life particularly during the Zia-ul-Haq regime.

Addressing the participants, Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan expressed his deep devotion to Faiz, declaring the legend a great advocate for world peace.

He said Faiz always emphasised the need for creating political awareness among the people and struggled for the same. Due to his tireless struggle for the downtrodden segments of society, Faiz had to face exile and jail, he added.

He said that Faiz’s literary and poetic material reflected his love and attachment with the country.

Nishan-e-Imtiaz recipient Faiz Ahmad Faiz, born on February 13, 1911, left us on November 20, 1984.
