Accountability watchdog chief says ‘nobody is above the law’

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has filed two appeals in the Lahore High Court (LHC) regarding two previous corruption cases against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

NAB Chairman Qamar Zaman Chaudhry revealed this during a press conference here on Friday.

Chaudhry said the LHC had recently given a verdict on NAB cases of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. However, he said that NAB has challenged the verdict of the accountability court for quashing cases against Nawaz Sharif in LHC.

“Nobody is above the law and ruthless accountability is important,” the NAB chairman responded to a question.

To another question, Chaudhry informed that an investigation was underway against former Balochistan chief minister Nawab Aslam Raisani regarding a corruption case. “Without solid evidence we cannot arrest anyone,” the chairman stated when asked about rampant corruption in Balochistan. NAB has repeatedly announced that an investigation was underway against some provincial ministers over corruption charges. However, Chaudhry stated that NAB was interrogating some important corruption cases in the province without naming any political personality or a minister.

“We will not spare anyone in the case of corruption,” he vowed.

He dispelled the impression regarding political interference in NAB and made it sure that he believes in a transparent way of investigation of corruption cases.

NAB Balochistan disposed off 295 complaint verifications, completed 70 of the total 177 authorized inquiries and finished 26 out of 47 authorized investigations during the year 2014.

Since its establishment, NAB Balochistan had recovered 1329.289 million rupees, said the DG NAB Syed Khalid Iqbal.

When asked about corruption in government departments, the DG NAB Balochistan said that most of the complaints were being received about education department in the province.

He stated that an action was also taken against those elements doing dual government jobs and that over 30 employees were apprehended by NAB in the province.
