Targeted killings forcing doctors to close shop: MQM lawmaker

A Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) lawmaker on Monday told the Sindh Assembly that doctors are closing clinics in Orangi due to rampant lawlessness and targeted killings.

MPA Muhammad Hussain Khan in his call attention notice said that the cleanup operation against terrorists, target killers and other criminals in going on in Karachi. He said that during the operation various innocent workers and sympathizers of MQM, along with police personnel, were being killed, especially in Orangi, Qasba, Ali Garh and Nazimabad.

The lawmaker said that people have started migrating from these areas. He said that due to the target killings of professionals, especially doctors, the performance of hospitals, including the Qatar Government Hospital, is badly affected. He informed that doctors are closing their clinics in Orangi because they fear that they will be killed. He asked the government to take notice of this sad situation.

However, Sindh Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Sikandar Mandhro said there is no cleanup operation in Karachi, and instead a targeted operation is being continued against terrorists and criminals. He presented the yearly figures of MQM sympathizers and the police officers martyred in Orangi, Qasba, Ali Garh and Nazimabad. He said there is a law and order problem in Karachi. He, however, said the government is taking every effort possible to ensure peace for Karachi, which includes these areas.
