Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday called for reforms in civil bureaucracy while expressing concern over the bureaucracy’s incompetence over service delivery.

“It is a point of concern that various officers even at senior levels are lacking in competence and initiative which is hampering service delivery to the people,” said the premier at a high-level meeting at the PM House attended by key federal ministers.

The meeting discussed the government’s reform agenda, including the set up of a Evaluation, Monitoring and Delivery Cell to keep strict tabs on working of key ministries.

The PM said that the government officials would be evaluated to improve government’s functioning in providing services to the masses, adding that the reforms in the civil bureaucracy would be ensured through international practices.

He also said that along with improving the accountability mechanism for the civil servants, their salary structure would be improved to provide them with better incentives.

He said that the reforms would be oriented towards ensuring welfare of the masses.
The premier has asked for a detailed report be presented to him within four months for bringing about holistic reforms in the civil service structure.

The next meeting in this regard has been called for Thursday.

Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal, Anusha Rehman, the premier’s daughter Maryam Nawaz Sharif, PM’s special assistants Khawaja Zaheer, Tariq Fatemi and MNA Danial Aziz attended the meeting.
