NA urges international community to help resolve Kashmir dispute

NA takes notice of sugarcane growers in Sindh who are being paid Rs 155 against Rs 182 per maund

The National Assembly Wednesday unanimously passed a resolution calling upon the international community to play its role for the resolution of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), and as per the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

The resolution was moved by Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam–Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and paid rich tributes to the sacrifices rendered by the Kashmiri people for the cause of self-determination. It noted that the brave and valiant people of Kashmir are continuing their just struggle despite the presence of oppressive 700, 000 Indian troops in the valley.

The resolution reiterated Pakistan’s continuous political, moral and diplomatic support for the Kashmiri people and said that the lingering dispute should be resolved through a fair and transparent plebiscite. It noted that the people of occupied Kashmir boycotted elections in the territory; therefore, the Indian government should refrain from such activities.

The resolution also strongly condemned the Indian human rights violations in Kashmir. It called upon the international community to investigate the incidents of human rights violations such as the kidnapping of Kashmiri youth from the valley. It also called upon the Indian government to allow human rights organizations to visit the area.

The resolution said that the Kashmir dispute is a centrepiece in the Indo-Pak dialogue and its resolution is imperative for durable peace and stability in the region. It also called upon the United Nations to strengthen the role of the UN military observer group.

The resolution also strongly denounced the unprovoked Indian firing on the Line of Control (LoC) and the Working Boundary that martyred innocent people and damaged properties.

Meanwhile, the National Assembly was informed on Wednesday that sugarcane growers in Sindh province were suffering due to the hegemony of sugar mills association, and being paid Rs 155 against the fixed price of Rs 182 per maund.

Around two million growers of the crop are in distress although there has been a clear verdict from both Sindh High Court and Supreme Court in favour of the farmers, Member of National Assembly (MNA) Nawab Yousaf Talpur informed on a point of order in the House.

He said other provinces have fixed the price at Rs 180 per maund for sugarcane but it is astonishing and unfortunate that in Sindh the growers are being offered Rs. 155 per maund by the millers.

Minister for States and Frontier Regions, Lt General (r) Abdul Qadir Baloch and Opposition Leader National Assembly Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah supported Yousaf Talpur and assured full cooperation to address the issues faced by growers in Sindh.
