The women comprise a major portion of the society and the development targets cannot be achieved without bringing them into mainstream of development, said Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif while addressed a high level meeting through a video-link at the Civil Secretariat on Tuesday. The meeting reviewed measures for the protection of the rights of women, checking violence against women and redressing the grievances of women subjected to violence.
Salman Sufi gave a detailed briefing to the meeting regarding the project of setting up centres throughout the province for immediate redressal of the grievances of women who have been victim of violence.
The chief minister called for immediate measures be taken for checking violence against women and redressing their grievances.
He said that the departments concerned with protection of the rights of women and saving them from violence should work in a coordinated manner. He said that setting up of centres throughout the province for upholding women rights and their protection against violence is a good proposal and there is a need for speedy measures for its implementation.
He issued instructions for setting up a steering committee headed by Minister for Home Colonel (r) Shuja Khanzada and Minister for Population Welfare Begum Zakiya Shahnawaz and directed that the committee should present a sustainable project regarding establishment of the centres for the protection of women against violence and other issues. The committee will comprise women assembly members and secretaries of departments concerned. He said that the Punjab government has undertaken effective legislation for empowerment of women and protection of their rights.
