Minorities’ protection top priority of govt: Aminul Hanaat

Minister of State for Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony Pir Aminul Hasnat Sunday said Pakistanis are a tolerant and peaceful nation in the world as they believe to respect other religions and their followers. Government is committed to protect the lives and properties of the minorities besides promoting interfaith harmony. Steps are also being taken to bring them in the mainstream of society.

Commenting on a report of Human Rights Watch regarding protection of minorities’ rights in Pakistan here the minister said government is doing its best to fulfil its responsibilities in connection with safety and protection of the minorities.

Referring to recent surveys conducted by GallupPakistan regarding letting the Christians to build their churches and wishing them on Christmas by Muslims, the minister said majority of people voted in favour of their religious freedom and share their religious festivals.

“Government itself celebrates about 10 religious festivals of minorities at official level every year in which followers of different beliefs are invited to share the events”, the minister added.

The minister said according to the survey 78 per cent of Pakistanis are in favour of Christians to be allowed to build their worship places which shows that Pakistani nation has the capacity to accept and respect followers of other religions.

The minister said a National Commission for Minorities (NCM) has already been reconstituted which is working for the protection of minorities’ rights. The commission comprises members from all minorities living in the country.

A three member committee is also working to review draft national policy on interfaith harmony under NCM, the minister added.He said government recognizes the contribution of minorities in the nation building as they are serving in all spheres of life including education, health and defense.

A welfare fund has been established for the economic uplift of minorities which releases funds for development schemes, financial assistance to needy individuals, scholarship scheme for their children, celebration of religious festivals and seminars for the promotion of interfaith harmony, he added.
