- Sharif reviews law and order situation in metropolis, orders provincial-level judicial enquiry into ‘extrajudicial killing’ of MQM workers
Hoping for reconciliation between the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif Friday urged the Sindh high-ups to work for restoration of peace in Karachi, also ordering the formation of a judicial commission to probe the alleged extrajudicial killings of MQM workers.
Accompanied by Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, the premier arrived in the metropolis on a brief visit aimed at reviewing law and order situation following Thursday’s shutdown against killing of MQM workers.
The premier held a meeting with Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, a veteran PPP politician, and Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan, who represents MQM, at the Governor’s House and urged both the high-ups to mend their differences with negotiations in order to restore peace in Karachi.
“Harmony between the two parties is vital for Karachi`s betterment. All the issues should be resolved at the provincial level,” Sharif said, reiterating his determination to the rid the city of violence.
KARACHI SECURITY:
Moreover, the premier also presided over a high-level meeting to review law and order situation in Karachi where Rangers director general (DG), Sindh Police inspector general (IG) and heads of security agencies briefed him on the overall progress in the ongoing crackdown against criminals.
The premier was also apprised of progress on the investigation into the killing of MQM worker Sohail Ahmed.
During the meeting, PM issued directives for the creation of a judicial commission within a week’s time to probe into the killing of MQM worker Sohail Ahmed. He assured MQM that the commission would investigate into the killing in a fair manner.
Speaking during meeting, Sindh CM told the prime minister that swift implementation of National Action Plan against terrorism has commenced with establishment of four committees. Scrutiny process has also started to forward terrorism-related cases to military court, he added.
Lauding Rangers and police for laying down their lives to maintain law and order, the chief minister stated that security situation has improved in the city.
PM MEETS MQM VICTIMS:
Furthermore, PM Sharif also met the family of murdered MQM workers Sohail Ahmad, Fraz Alam and Rehan at the Governor House where MQM members including Qamar Mansoor, Babar Ghauri, Farooq Sattar and Haider Abbas Raza were also present.
“The government can no way allow extra-judicial killings,” the PM observed, and held out assurance to the victims that justice would be served. He vowed that all terrorists would be eliminated from the city and would be tried in military courts.
Later on, MQM leader Haider Abbas Rizvi thanked PM Sharif for his Karachi visit and assurance of justice regarding killings of the party workers.
While talking to media after a meeting with the PM, Rizvi said that Sharif criticised the Sindh Police and directed it to arrest the killers immediately.
