Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday emphasised on trickle down effect of reduction in the prices of petroleum products to the common man and directed Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah to ensure cut in public transport fares.

“The benefits of cut in petroleum prices must reach the common man as it has a great impact on the people’s lives,” the prime minister said while talking to media at Karachi Stock Exchange (KSE) after an interactive session with KSE officials and members.

Nawaz Sharif said a downward trend had been registered in the kitchen items in the country and that the growers were also benefited in the shape of low inputs cost. The prime minister informed the media that he was going to announce another significant cut in POL prices today (Saturday).

To a question, he said: “We have taken legal action against those found responsible for petroleum crisis in the country a couple of days earlier.” He said Pakistan’s economy was moving in the right way and was coming out of the crisis. However, it was still facing certain problems like energy crisis and all this calls for joint and concrete efforts by all the stakeholders, he added.

“We are moving ahead with a well-calculated plan,” he elaborated. He was confident that his government would overcome the energy crisis in the country before the completion of its tenure.

“I hope, within our tenure the country will be rather surplus in electricity.” He also assured that gas supply would also increase significantly in the country. “We are also purchasing liquefied natural gas (LNG) to strengthen the gas supply.” Besides feeding the existing power plants with LNG, the government was setting up LNG-based power plants. The transmission lines network was also being strengthened, he added.

He said Pakistan was fighting a very difficult war against terrorism and extremism. But, very positive results will come up in next few days, he wished.

He offered full support of his government to all the provincial governments for maintaining peace and security as it was imperative for the economic activities leading to prosperity and development in the country.
