- Sindh Assembly passes resolution condemning terrorist attack on APS Peshawar, offers prayers for martyred children and school staff
The Sindh government on Tuesday admitted on the floor of the Sindh Assembly that the University of Sufism and Modern Sciences in Bhitshah is still not functional.
Sindh Senior Minister for Education and Literacy Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, answering a question posed by MQM’s Heer Soho, about the number of new government/public private sector universities established in Sindh during last five years, informed that 10 universities were established in Sindh by the government, while seven had been created in the private sector. He, however, admitted that the University of Sufism and Modern Sciences, Bhitshah, a varsity that belongs to the government sector, was yet to be made functional.
Mehtab Akbar Rashdi of PML-F asked him to elaborate on the reasons why the university was not open for business. However, the education minister could not cite specific reasons. He said his government is taking efforts to make the varsity functional and it would be opened soon.
It may be remembered that the International University of Peace and Sufism (IUPS) was inaugurated by Dr. Nazir A. Mughal, then Vice Chancellor of the University of Sindh at Bhitshah, back in September 2012.
PRAYERS OFFERED FOR PESHAWAR MARTYRS:
The Sindh Assembly members also prayed for those martyred in APS Peshawar and passed a resolution condemning the brutal incident, and adjourned the sitting to pay their respects.
After question hour, the leader of the house CM Qaim Ali Shah requested the speaker to note that the day marked the 40th day of the martyrdom of the Peshawar schoolchildren. He also informed that he had already asked all his departments for Quran Khawani. He requested that the assembly also pray for the martyrs. Khawaja Izharul Hassan of MQM and Sharjeel Inam Memon of PPPP said that their parties had submitted resolutions on the matter, and that they should be passed immediately. The speaker ruled that both resolutions should be passed as a joint resolution.
Fateha was offered for the martyrs. The joint resolution was presented and passed unanimously and the chair adjourned the house until Tuesday, 10:00am.
The joint resolution said: “This House condemns the barbaric, brutal and cowardly attack on the Army Public School, Peshawar, on December 16, 2014, in which 132 students were martyred and several others were injured and demands from the government of Pakistan to arrest the culprits and award exemplary punishment for this heinous crime. This House also conveys a heartfelt message of condolence to the bereaved families.”
