NGOs step up to form unit to change narratives about terrorism

Coordination unit has been set up to make a peace network of different non-government organizations (NGOs) and universities across the Punjab to counter violence and extremism in society.

Umeed Jawan (Hope is still young), a national level NGO, and BARGAD youth development organisation in collaboration with the Punjab government Youth Affairs Department held a daylong meeting with more than 45 NGOs and universities from different parts of the province at Punjab Youth Department on Wednesday.

The meeting announced BARGAD as coordinator unit of working on formation and supporting the Umeed Jawan Peace Network and chalk our further strategy.

The Punjab Youth Department would also facilitate the coordination unit and peace network by providing a secretariat to help in coordination with the peace network. The network would also focus peace activities and counter extremism strategies in different parts of South Punjab.

The objective of the peace network is to raise collective voice for peace and counter violence at wider scale. The network also aims to critically overview the implementation of National Action Plan (NAP) to counter terrorism.

The meeting on Wednesday discussed the proposed draft, rules of business and functions of the peace network.

Abdul Saboor of Umeed Jawan, Sabiha Shaheen of BARGAD, representatives of the Punjab Youth Department and members of more than 40 NGOs and various universities actively participated in the meeting.
