- Sindh CM Qaim Ali Shah impressed by results of targeted operations, directs law enforcement agencies to accelerate efforts
- 194 cases of terrorism to be referred to military courts
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah has directed law enforcement agencies to intensify and strengthen vigilance at the entry and exit points of the province.
“The on-going targeted operation has produced encouraging results and I want you to further intensify it. We are committed with our people to purge the province of terrorist elements,” said the CM while presiding over a meeting on law and order at the CM House on Tuesday.
The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Sajjad Saleem Hotiana, Rangers Director General (DG) Major General Bilal Akbar, Sindh Insepctor General Police (IGP) Ghulam Hyder Jamali, Principal Secretary to CM Alamudin Bullo, Karachi Additional IG Ghulam Qadir Thebo and others.
Briefing the CM, IGP Jamali said that the targeted operation has given good results.
“If the 496 days of targeted operation are compared to the same number of days prior to the operation, 337 percent more criminals have been killed in encounters, 16 percent more target killers arrested, 285 percent more terrorist arrested and 96 percent more extortionists have been apprehended,” he claimed.
He said that during the 496 days of operation, 766 criminals have been killed as against 175 killed in the previous period, 1,399 target killers arrested as against 1,200 of the previous period, 478 terrorists arrested as against 124, 463 extortionists held as against 236 and 17,932 arrested as against 13,859 nabbed in the previous 496 days.
Giving details of target killing, the IGP said that during the 496 days of operation 2,465 people were killed as against 3,848 people during the same period before operation.
“This shows 35 percent reduction in killing incidents.”
Similarly, target killing has come down by 56 percent. During the operation 1,240 people succumbed to targeted killing whereas 2,881 were killed by target killers during the same period before the start of the operation.
The police chief said that during 2014, 136 policemen lost their lives in the line of duty in Karachi and 47 in the rest of Sindh.
“The police arrested 41 accused and killed 22 criminals in encounters,” he said.
Responding to a question by the CM, the police head said that 315 cases have been completed to present their challans in session court. Out of these, 194 cases have been identified as terrorist cases to be referred to military courts. Out of the 194 cases of terrorism, 28 are in District East, 16 in South, four of the Crime Investigation Department (CID), 95 of Benazirabad, 17 of Hyderabad division, 26 of Larkana division and eight of Sukkur division.
Responding to another question, the IGP said that there were 40 cases of kidnapping for ransom in Karachi and 60 in the rest of Sindh when he took over and now the figures have came down to three in Karachi and four in the rest of Sindh.
A dedicated force of 700 police personnel has been earmarked for polio campaign under the command of Rapid Reaction Force (RRF) deputy IGP.
The CM directed the IGP to make the investigation system more efficient.
“I want timely completion of investigation and submission of challans in the court. You have to strengthen your entire system for proper implementation of National Action Plan,” he said.
