Imran Khan summoned in ex-CJP’s defamation case

Islamabad West District and Sessions Judge Nazir Hussain Gujjana on Tuesday summoned Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan in the Rs 20 billion defamation suit filed by former chief justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.

The petition was filed under Section-9 of the Defamation Ordinance 2002, through a group of lawyers comprising Nayyab Hassan Gardezi, Toufique Asif, Sheikh Ahsan-un-Din, Aamir Mughal, Razaullah Niazi and Raja Zahid.

The petitioner demanded Rs 15 billion in damages from Khan for defaming him at home and abroad by hurling baseless, mischievous, and malicious allegations against him through his speeches. The ex-CJ’s counsels also claimed Rs 5 billion as damages for mental agony, torture, harassment etc., caused to their client and his family.

Khan also stands accused of using slanderous and disparaging language against the Chaudhry in his interviews.

The counsel additionally informed that the any amount recovered under the case would be donated for a good cause. It will likely be given to a national institution or be set aside for the welfare of the downtrodden.
