Rural areas across Pakistan are facing 12 hours of power outages whereas urban areas are witnessing six to eight hours of load shedding as power shortfall exceeded 3,500 megawatts on Monday, sources said.
Currently, electricity demand is 10,000 MW whereas generation is 6,500MW.
Hydel power plants are generating 1,000 MW, thermal 1,500 MW while independent power projects (IPPs) are producing 400 MW electricity.
The power shortages have sparked protests and crippled key industries, costing hundreds of thousands of jobs in a country already beset by high unemployment and widespread poverty.
There are several joint energy and infrastructure projects under way in Pakistan to end power load shedding.
