ISLAMABAD-
The Foreign Office of Pakistan on Tuesday condemned the blasphemous caricatures published by French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo terming them an attempt to create a divide among people and civilisations.
In a statement , the FO spokesperson Tasneem Shaikh said that president and prime minister of Pakistan have echoed the sentiments of Pakistanis and have strongly condemned the blasphemous publication ‘which has caused great offence to Muslims by hurting their sentiments and religious sensibilities all over the world’.
She added that the National Assembly and the Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee have also passed resolution condemned the caricatures.
The FO spokesperson further called for shunning stereotypes and promoting of harmony among people, adding that freedom of expression should not be misused for hurting religious sentiments.
It was also reported that the Jeddah-based Organisation of Islamic Cooperation plans to sue the French magazine Charlie Hebdo for publishing the offensive caricatures.
Secretary General of the organisation Iyad Madani told the media that OIC is studying Europe and French laws and other available procedures to be able to take legal action against Charlie Hebdo.
“If French laws allow us to take legal procedures against Charlie Hebdo, OIC will not hesitate to prosecute the French magazine,” he said.
The Adviser to the Prime Minister on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz, had also written a letter to Madani, recommending a legal action against the magazine.
