Strange things happen to connected people in this land of the pure of ours. Take the wedding of a former PCB chief’s son last Sunday. Quite an event. But when the father phoned Mr Zardari for the invite, the latter insisted that he would host the Walima. So everyone went to Bilawal House. Security was tip-top, of course; no mobile phones, bag checks, and strictly by invitation only. No surprises for guessing that the who’s who were there. The guy who made the arrangements charged up to several millions apparently, or so says the grapevine. Zardari might not be able to pull the party together politically, but look how lavishly he treats the jiyalas when the occasion is right? And what does Mian sb do with his loyalists?

You’d be surprised, but Lahore’s working women – some of them, at least – have become quite enterprising lately, not to mention entrepreneurial. By the day they are bankers, brokers, stylists, etc, but by night they are far more innovative, falling back to the oldest profession though by using the most modern methods. These are the times of social media; facebook, twitter, viber, WhatsApp, and what not. And they are quite adept at networking. So some are, reportedly, making hay just when the sun is not shining. Forward looking yet rooted in antiquity.
