Nepotism gnawing away at institutions

Supreme Court judge Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa has said that the time has come to weed out favouritism, nepotism, personal likes and dislikes and political culture in making appointments to all institutions, adding that institutions have been ruined by such malpractices.

He gave these remarks while presiding over a three-member bench of the SC during the course of a hearing on Tuesday.

“Politicians serve their interests by getting the people of their choice appointed on public offices. If there are no vacancies in a department then why are temporary appointments made?” he questioned.

During the course of hearing, Advocate Khawaja Haris appeared on behalf of Anwar Saifullah and took the plea that Oil and Gas Development Company (OGDCL) chairman was authorised to make these appointments and the minister cannot be held responsible for illegal appointments merely for writing a note.

The court remarked, “Political culture is in place in country under which friends are favoured and nepotism is promoted.”

Advocate Haris said that the culture of nepotism is in place everywhere in the country, however, highly-qualified people are appointed. The chairman is responsible for all the matters, he said.

The judge remarked that the note was sent by the minister, adding that the chairman had said that the minister had forced him to make the appointments.

Advocate Haris said that the chairman should have taken the decision after looking into the laws and should not have done illegal work on some one’s bidding.

The hearing of the case has been adjourned till today (Wednesday).
