Reopening schools

Some unanswered questions

Gen Raheel Sharif’s surprise presence at Army Public School Peshawar established the right kind of optics – even though the political elite decided to stay behind the scenes – but generally confusion continues to surround the reopening of all schools around the country. Many schools were kept closed yesterday, especially in Punjab, largely because respective administrations were unable to implement the security protocol as demanded by the government. The uncertainty did not help worried parents, who were already uncertain about following the Jan12 timeline.

The TTP’s post-Peshawar actions have also added to the worry factor. First Mullah Fazlullah floated a video message where he not only took credit for the Peshawar barbarity, but vowed more and much worse attacks. And then Jamaat ul Ahraar carried out the Rawalpindi Imambargah attack, showing once again how easily they can target whomever they please. And since children are now officially fair game, there is every reason to be worried. Between the two, there was also unconfirmed chatter that the five TTP terrorists taken out in Lahore were planning an attack on a local school, among other sites. True or not, it added to the already tense atmosphere.

There is an urgent need for provincial governments to streamline school security. There is talk of guards being un-trained, with some schools having been asked to route their own support staff – like gardeners, lab assistants, etc – to double as security guards, which will not get the job done. There are also reports of disputes about official financing; like footing the large bill for providing CCTV security to all schools. While such issues are not addressed, parents will remain hesitant, and school attendance will continue to suffer. Already, people have paid a very high price for the war against terrorism. Every effort should be made that no more innocent blood is spilled as we tighten the noose around the enemy. There are still some unanswered questions regarding provision of security to schools. These must be settled immediately and amicably.
