Al Qaeda commander among seven killed in Karachi raid

KARACHI-

Seven militants, including a local leader of global terrorist group al Qaeda, were killed in an encounter in Karachi on Thursday.

According to police officials, security forces conducted a raid in Madina Colony of Sohrab Goth on an intelligence tip-off.

The raid led to a crossfire between the militants and security forces. Seven terrorists were killed in the gunbattle. Police claimed that all of those killed were members of al Qaeda. The killed commander was identified as Pervaiz.

Arms and ammunition was also recovered from the militants’ den. Security forces claimed the militants were planning an attack in the city.

A crackdown against militant groups has been intensified across the country following December 16’s deadly Taliban attack on an army-run school in Peshawar in which at least 150 people were killed.

Also on Thursday, at least two persons, including a policeman, were gunned down in two separate incidents.

Police constable Sharif Saleem was gunned down by unidentified attackers in Shadman Town while Aftab; an ambulance driver, was shot dead in Orangi Town of the metropolis.
