Re-opening schools

And ensuring security

Providing fool-proof security to schools is, of course, a primary concern now. But the way the Punjab government is extending its own deadline for reopening schools seems to give the impression of a disorganised task force attempting to undertake a high-priority matter. Indeed, the way schools have been shut down – with complete security measures and their timeline still unknown – does play into Taliban hands, to an extent. They have struck fear in the hearts of the public as well as the government, which was, after all, their primary goal.

It is important to note that the task facing the government is not easy. Thousands of schools must now be guaranteed safety. And it is not likely that one model or drill can fit all schools in the province, or the country. But as far as essential safety measures go, the schools must also play a constructive role. Some of the private schools are in fact extremely lucrative businesses. And having no shortage of funds, they must make some necessary investments now to upgrade their infrastructure, rather than wait for their turn to come as the government bolsters school after school, or worse, make the phone call that puts them ahead of others. It would also help if, contrary to popular practice, these ‘investments’ do not eventually find their way onto children’s fee forms.

It doesn’t help, of course, that Mullah Fazlullah has threatened strikes much worse than Peshawar. People are afraid, and understandably so. And, God forbid, should the slightest mishap happen – which is always possible in such a war – the government would not hear the end of public complaints. Therefore, the need to be thorough cannot be stressed enough. But, at the same time, the last thing the government can afford is to look weak. For that, it must depart from its habit of talking first and acting later; which has often left it unable to put its muscle where its mouth is. The matter of the schools is a national emergency. It must be resolved immediately, so no more of the children’s academic year is wasted.

  1. Dear Admin it is very very difficult to provide the fool proof security to all the schools/colleges as it is a great burden for all the Governments. I think the schools now should be opened and taking maximum possible security measures.
