IHCBA head says lawyers to launch protest against govt’s decision to establish military courts which is ‘encroachment on people’s rights’

The Islamabad High Court Bar Association (IHCBA) has opposed the setting up of military courts, saying that the establishment of special military courts will lead to usurpation of the rights of people.

On behalf of the bar association, IHCBA President Mohsin Akhtar Kiani has reportedly condemned the bill presented in the parliament with regard to establishment of military courts.

“If the government accords approval for establishment of military courts then the lawyers’ community will announce its strategy and launch a protest movement,” he said.

The government has expressed mistrust on existing judicial system in the country by presenting bill on establishment of military courts in the parliament, he added.

Inviting the military leadership and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) officers in the All Parties Conference (APC) is tantamount to “imposing martial law in the country”, said the IHCBA president.

“Not only are the rights of people being encroached upon, all the political parties have become facilitators of the army by compromising on the rights of the citizens,” he reportedly said.

The government itself has invited the army to interfere in politics, he opined.

“The legal community wants the government to repose trust in the judicial system of the country,” he said.
