Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Nasir-ul-Mulk on Tuesday took notice on applications received through Human Rights Cell of the Supreme Court stating that influential mafias had established illegal hydrants openly in the city by taking illegal connection, tempering and damaging the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board’s water lines in different areas.

It was further stated that not only the growth in installation of illegal hydrants has inexorably damaged the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board main stream system but these illegal water connections are also polluting the clean water and are creating health hazards and environmental problems.

Due to this water theft, water supply is suffering badly and these entities are becoming a challenge for the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board and the government. Taking the cognizance of the issue, the CJP ordered that the matter be fixed in the court at Karachi Branch Registry in the ongoing week with notice to all concerned.

SHC bars PMDC from final order on de-recognition of JSMU

The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Tuesday barred the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) from issuing final order in proceeding, if any, initiated in pursuance of its de-recognition notice issued to Jinnah Sindh Medical University over shortage of faculty. A division bench headed by Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar also issued notice to the PMDC and provincial health secretary to submit their replies to the petition by January 14.

The bench had taken up a petition filed by Jinnah Sindh Medical University through its Registrar Muhammad Irfan Ashraf who pleaded the court to declare as illegal the notice issued to the university warning it of de-recognition. The court was also requested to restrain PMDC from taking any coercive action against the university.

The counsel for the petitioner submitted that in order to enhance practical and technical knowledge of its students, the university was attached with Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC), National Institute of Child Health (NICH) and National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD).

After the passage of 18th constitutional amendment, the JPMC, NICH and NICVD were devolved to the province but their employees went to the court against its devolution and got a stay order against it, he said, adding since their petitions were pending disposal in the court and the stay order was still in the field for more than two years, the university administration was unable to exert its authority in its affiliated hospitals.

The counsel told the judges that there had been dearth of teaching staff but the university administration was unable to appoint, transfer or dismiss any employee in the hospitals.

He said the PMDC, which was party in the proceedings and well aware of devolution issue, issued notice to the petitioner to the detriment of the students and threatened to de-recognise it over the dearth of teaching staff.
