Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-Chairman and former president Asif Ali Zardari on Monday laid the foundation stone of two hydro-power projects to be constructed on Nara and Rohri canals at a cost of $ 84 million near Sukkur.
One of the projects would be constructed on Nara Canal while the other on Rohri Canal.
Zardari said that Nara Hydro Power Project will be constructed at RD-26 of Nara Canal at a cost of $ 47.6 million. It would generate 15MW of electricity
Talking about Rohri Hydro Power Project, he said that it would be built at RD-15 of Rohri Canal. Its capacity in the peak season is 9 MW and its construction cost would come to $ 36.4 million dollars. He appreciated the Sindh government efforts for following the guidelines of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto for investing in power generation. “Once these both the projects become operational it would create great impact on local economy,” he said.
Moreover, Zardari said that another mega project of 40MW hydro power project will also be installed at Guddu Barrage.
Talking about Sukkur Barrage, the PPP co-chairman said that without changing its structure, a rehabilitation study of the barrage would be conducted. “This barrage is a state of art. It has revolutionised the economy of the province. Therefore, it would be protected and strengthened,” he vowed. He directed that these two projects should be completed within given time duration of two and a half years.
