Urdu continues its fight for official status

  • SC issues notice to Cabinet Division secretary in petition seeking official language status for Urdu

 

The Supreme Court (SC) has issued notice to Cabinet Division secretary on the petition seeking status of official language for Urdu and sought reply from him.

Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Nasir ul Mulk has remarked, “We cannot give decision in this case without hearing the parties concerned.”

Justice Gulzar Ahmad has remarked, “All speak Urdu and we are also speaking Urdu. The petitioner wants what more than this.”

These remarks were given during the hearing of a petition filed by Kokab advocate Monday.

The petitioner took the plea it was laid down in the constitution that Urdu will be given the status of national language but no progress has been made so far in this respect and English has been adopted everywhere. Urdu be declared official language, he pleaded.

The court remarked it cannot give any decision without hearing the parties concerned. The hearing of the case was adjourned indefinitely.
