President urges media to play responsibly

Addressing Seerat Conference, Hussain calls for cautiousness while reporting certain incidents of terrorism, stresses need to follow guidelines set by Prophet (PBUH)

 

President Mamnoon Hussain has urged media to play a responsible, objective and effective role by promoting sublime human values of tolerance, affection and brotherhood, for progress and prosperity of the country.

Addressing National Seerat Conference, the president said, “Our religion teaches complete obedience to the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and gives us basic guidelines to follow the right path. Media should also enhance its due role for the betterment of the country and nation.”

He called for cautiousness and responsibility while reporting certain incidents of terrorism and the matters involving national security and state secrets. He said the role of media should be defined and reviewed in the light of teachings of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and Islam. He said the media had played remarkable role regarding the national security and national interests but there were also some instances of creating undue sensations by crossing the limits.

The president said the human society, particularly the Muslim society is like a family with its members closely attached to each other by stronger bonds of close cooperation, tolerance, and brotherhood. He said the Holy Prophet (PBUH) had termed the Islamic society as a building with its parts supporting each other and the similar characteristics of the nations make them impregnable.

President Mamnoon said this region, particularly Pakistan, is facing the scourge of terrorism and its peaceful people are confronting huge challenges. He paid tribute to the martyrs of Peshawar tragedy and asked their families not to feel themselves alone rather the whole nation shared their grief and behind them.

He said if we try to understand the current situation in the light of Quranic teachings, it would be clear that the best principles of life being practiced throughout the world had already been taught by Islam some 1,400 years ago. He said simplicity and frugality are the need of every society for rapid progress and prosperity. He said Islam had developed just economic system for uplift of downtrodden and also introduced measures to address deprivations.

The president hoped that such gatherings would not only help in addressing the shortcomings in the society, but also help devise a national strategy to confront prevailing situation.

Minister for religious affairs, in his welcome address, said media should itself prepare its code of conduct and implement it.

Ruet-e-Hilal Committee Chairman Mufti Muneebur Rehman, religious scholars Anwarul Haq Haqqani, Dr Muhammad Hussain Akbar, Dr Yasin Zafar also addressed the conference.

Minister of State for Religious Affairs Pir Muhammad Aminul Hasnat Shah led collective prayers for the prosperity and development of the country and unity of the Muslim Ummah.

President Mamnoon Hussain also conferred awards among the best writers on the topic of Seerat-un-Nabi (PBUH) in various categories.
