Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against seven unidentified suspects for attacking a candlelight vigil held in the memory of slain Punjab governor Salman Taseer.

The attack took place on Sunday evening when members of civil society gathered at Liberty Chowk to light candles in the slain politician’s memory.

A group of nine to ten men showed up at the scene, snatched and tore up placards and photos of Salman Taseer, before beating up the participants present at the vigil.

The attackers indiscriminately kicked women and other participants. They also subjected the reporters covering the event to torture, threw their cameras on the road and damaged their DSNG vans.

Ordering a probe into the incident, the authorities have ordered swift arrest of the culprits behind the attack.
