Four death row convicts condemned to death for their involvement in 2002’s suicide bombing attack at Shah-e-Najaf Imam Bargah in Rawalpindi, were acquitted by Lahore High Court’s Rawalpindi bench on Monday.
The attack led to a loss of 19 lives. 35 people were injured.
The four men, Fazal Muhammad, Tahir Mehmood, Hafiz Naseer and Habibullah, were handed down the death sentence by an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in 2004.
The convicts then filed an intra-court appeal against the decision.
Hearing the case on the appeal, Justice Ibadur Rehman Lodhi and Justice Qazi Muhammad Amin ordered immediate release of the accused, observing that they were awarded death sentence over ‘insufficient proof’.
On Monday, LHC suspended death warrants for convicts Muhammad Faiz and Muhammad Sharif, condemned to death in two separate murder cases.
The court issued the orders after the convicts’ counsels pleaded that their clients’ appeals in Supreme Court are awaiting a decision.
Meanwhile,local court in Multan issued death warrants two convicts Ahmed Ali alias Shish Naag and Shabir alias Doctor for involvement in the two murders and assassination of District Superintendent Police (DSP) Khanewal, respectively.
