PM urges president to discard mercy petitions of convicted target killers

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday asked President Mamnoon Hussain to reject the mercy petitions of five target killing convicts on death row, private media reported.

According to details, PM Nawaz wrote a letter to President Mamnoon and urged him to reject the mercy pleas of five prisoners convicted for target killings. The convicts, hailing from Karachi, include Muhammad Ikramul Haq alias Lahori, Ahmed Ali alias Shish Naag, Mohammad Tayyab alias Sajjad ,Ghulam Shabbir alias Doctor and Zulfiqar Ali.

After the brutal attack of Taliban on Peshawar’s Army Public School which killed at least 150 people;  including 132 school children, the PM  had lifted the six-year-old moratorium on death penalty.

Since then, seven executions have been carried out.

The moratorium was imposed by former president Asif Ali Zardari during the tenure of the Pakistan Peoples Party government in 2008.
