ECP gears up to hold Senate polls in March

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Friday has started its preparations regarding holding of elections for 52 seats of the Senate. The elections are likely to be held in the first week of March. The schedule for the elections would be issued in the first week of February.

According to the details, senators including Senate Chairman Nayyar Hussain Bukhari would retire from the post in the Senate.

According to ECP sources, the elections would be held in all provinces for as many as seven general seats, two women’s seats, one technocrat seat and one cleric seats. At least four seats from Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and two seats each from Islamabad and minorities would also be contested.

Reportedly, the nomination papers for the Senate elections have been published.

Others who will retire from the seats include Pervaiz Rashid, Babar Ghauri, Chaudhry Shujaat, Abdul Ghafoor Haidri, Afrasiab Khattak, Jahangir Badar, Mushahidullah Khan, Zafar Ali Shah, Raja Zafarul Haq, Rehman Malik and Farooq Naik.
