  • Executions delayed at Kot Lakhpat, Adiala jails on Saturday
  • Security increased in Lahore, Mach and Quetta prisons amid fear of jailbreaks

Prisons across the country have been put on high alert as the government pushes through with its campaign of executing condemned prisoners in various jails.

Sources in the Punjab Home Department told Pakistan Today that eight prisoners would be hanged by the neck in the coming 24 hours. These prisoners include four men – Zahid, Ahsan, Kamran and Umar – who were involved in the attack on an army camp in Gujrat and an office of an intelligence agency in Multan.

The prisoners, who are currently being held at the Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore were scheduled for execution on Saturday but their hangings were postponed as the prison authorities were yet to receive their death warrants from the court.

Convict Zahid, who was involved in the attack on the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) office in Multan could be hanged anytime on Sunday.

Sources said that hangings at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail have been postponed due to security reasons and the home department was considering moving the condemned prisoners to other district jails for carrying out the executions.

Meanwhile security has been increased at Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore as well as prisons in Balochistan’s Mach and Quetta on Saturday amid fears of jailbreaks.

Heavy contingents of Punjab Rangers and Punjab Police were deployed at the Kot Lakhpat Jail as law enforcement agencies placed barricades and barbed wires on all roads leading to the jail.

Pedestrians and visitors are only allowed to enter the jail after proper checking by the newly-commissioned Quick Response Force and other officials of law enforcement agencies.

Heavy contingents of police and paramilitary troops were also deployed at the Mach and Quetta district jails on Saturday.

At least 14 prisoners are on death row at the Mach Jail, one of the largest jails in Pakistan.

The prisoners on death row do not belong to any banned organisation but four of them were charged with terrorism acts, such as targeted killings and murder charges over personal disputes.

CONVICT DIES:

Meanwhile, a condemned prisoner who was to be hanged on Dec 23, Tuesday, died of heart attack in Sukkur Jail.

Jail authorities said that the prisoner, Nazim from Jacobabad district, suffered from high blood pressure.
