Scientists have discovered the world’s deepest-dwelling fish during research in the Pacific.
The snailfish was caught on video at a record depth of 8,145 metres (26,700ft).
The researchers also found several new species on their voyage to the Mariana Trench and caught the first footage of the mysterious “supergiant” amphipod.
Alan Jamieson, from the University of Aberdeen, said: “The snailfish did not look like anything we had seen before, nor does it look like anything we know of.
“It is unbelievably fragile, with large wing-like fins and a head resembling a cartoon dog.
“It’s nice to think there are places out there that no one else has seen.”
