Punjab CM says city’s traders wanted to open shops but could not do so as PTI had jammed roads
Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Monday said that the people of Lahore “totally rejected” the shutdown call of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
According to details, the CM said that business continued as usual in all important markets of provincial metropolis despite PTI’s protest.
Despite the desire of traders to open shops, shops could not be opened in the provincial capital as the routes to markets were jammed by sit-ins of PTI leaders and workers who also burnt tyres and placed fences and tractor trolleys to block roads, Shahbaz said.
If the people of Lahore were supporting PTI, why did PTI workers torture the traders of Lahore, close down their routes and snatched their car keys, questioned Shahbaz.
Talking to assembly members, the CM said that the incidents aired by various television channels covering PTI’s protest in Lahore “will remain a stigma on the face of PTI forever”. The world saw how a well-off lady claiming to bring change slapped a poor driver and pulled him out of a car, said Shahbaz.
Shahbaz said he was “deeply grieved” over the loss of precious human lives due to the “merciless politics of PTI”.
PTI Chairman Imran Khan should realise that a number of ambulances could not reach hospitals due to his “violent” protest, hundreds of thousands of workers and daily wagers were deprived of livelihood and the national economy suffered losses amounting to billions of rupees, said Shahbaz.
Shahbaz thanked PML-N workers and the people of Lahore for showing “exemplary tolerance and restraint and acting upon the instructions of the PML-N leadership to avoid coming out on roads as PTI shut down the city.” The Punjab CM also thanked businessmen, traders, traders’ organisations and office-bearers of Lahore Chambers of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) for their “historic unity” which “proved that they will not allow anyone to paralyse the national economy”.
