Frustrated by Pak win, Indian media accuses players of making obscene gestures

Pakistan Hockey Team Head Coach Shahnaz Sheikh boycotted the post-match press conference after the Indian media accused the celebrating Pakistani players with obscene gestures, including finger salutes, directed towards Indian players and the fans.

Soon after the match ended, all Pakistan players took their shirts off and ran wildly on the ground to celebrate their historic victory over India. However, the Indian media said the Pakistani players’ celebration was objectionable, saying the Indians expected them to shake hands with their opponents after the match to maintain the spirit of the game.

The Indian media earlier claimed that the Federation of International Hockey (FIH) had started an investigation into the incident but the FIH released an official statement that “no further action is warranted” on the Indian charge.

“At the conclusion of the semi-final match between India and Pakistan, which was won by Pakistan, the celebration of the Pakistani team contained some behaviour that warranted further investigation by me as Tournament Director,” Wiert Doyer said in an FIH press release.

“As a result I have spoken to the Head Coach of the Pakistan team, Mr. Shahnaz Sheikh, and told him that the behaviour of Pakistan players went beyond what is acceptable to standards of the FIH.

“The behaviour in question concerned many members of the Pakistan team. It is difficult to find any particular miscreant, and it is possible that the behaviour of the players may have been a reaction.

“Mr Shahnaz Sheikh has apologised and assured me that this behaviour will not occur again. Given these matters, I’ve decided that no further action is warranted,” the statement further read.

The match was level at 3-3 until the penultimate minute when Muhammad Qadir’s deflection turned the game towards Pakistan’s way.

“We won the Asian Games final, but we did not didn’t anything like that. This is not the right way to celebrate,” said a visibly dejected India captain Sardar Singh.

  1. I am sorry but this is Stupid journalism…your headline says "Frustrated by Pak win, Indian media accuses players of making obscene gestures" and your article clearly says that 'Mr Shahnaz Sheikh has apologised and assured me that this behaviour will not occur again'

So the allegation by Indian media was not baseless or due to frustration. Pakistani players did something wrong and their coach had to apologies for that.

    • Achha lga hmad bhai baat samjhi aapne..
I enjoyed the whole match on TV. It was such an incredible game. Even I didn't regret losing to Pakistan particularly here. Whole joy was gone seeing the ugly celebration.

    • Have you seen football matches? That’s the most commonly n frequently occuring way of celebration that players take off shirts and run in the ground. What is obscene about it? And he had to apologize of course. Why? It’s wise to calm the situation even if ur not wrong instead of getting into a baseless and lame mess. What was there to complain about in the first place. Also they did ACCUSE of giving finger salutes etc which btw NEVER happened.

    • Players did right things what needed to be done … Players showed finger tho those abusing our religion ..
U r welcome with smile for peace … If indian tries to bully us like this just save ur ass hum andr ghus k phat jatay hn

    • I am glad that there are sensible people like you here, people who can look at things objectively and can comment in an unbiased manner

  2. This article is very biased. Our players were indeed doing obscene gestures towards the fans in the stands. It was clearly visible in the channel as well as in pictures on facebook. Shameful

    • Well said. It was a brilliant match by both the teams and anyone could have won. Just sad that Pakistani team played a brilliant game, but this match will be remembered for the obscene gestures at the end of the game. The Pakistan players or for that matter any athlete from any country who uses obscene gestures, only ends up shaming themselves and his/ her country. Bad journalism is present in every country.

  3. i can understand indian dejection and sorrow ,in the morning they lost a cricket test match to Australia. Indian team was on the brink to win the match but unfortunately could not took the pressure and in the evening arch rival Pakitan beat them in hockey. Ganguly took hid dhirt off after a famous win against England in a one day match and football players also do the same after crucial games. Its time that indians should learn to accept defea. WELL PLAYED PAKISTANt

    • Pakistan played well..no doubt. But, team showed their class of indecency today. Taking the shirt off is different from showing middle finger to spectators….isn’t it? Is Pak coach apologizing for no reason?

      • Better to apologize even if ur not wrong instead of getting into a lame mess. U don’t get it what was there to make such a mess about? It’s an eextremely common sight in football matches. Why is that never investigated or complained against? Because those are not Pakistani players doing against India???

    • Dear Mr. Atif, I was at the Kalinga stadium today, there was a lot more that the Pakistani players did than just taking their shirts off. I, personally, clapped all the while after the Pakistanis' win, but trust me, the "lewd gestures" that were done, especially by the Pakistani goalkeeper at the audience, in front of all the dignitaries, I cannot even mention on this public forum. I, for one, deeply respect Pakistan. You would not believe this, but being an Indian, I still sang THE ENTIRE QAUMI TARANA, while it was being played when the match started in respect of the spirit and your country, much to the surprise and shock of my own countrymen, and at the end of the match, THIS is what I see from your countrymen? Disgusting and Distasteful. Trust me, I am not partisan, but they deserve strict action against them, speaking from a completely impartial point of view,

    • take off shirt is not an issue every team does this after winning a match but to show objectionable finger to crowd is really unacceptable.

    • The Comment which u posted shows ur mental imbalance n being economical with Facts…well no surprise. Cant expect anything else from A pakistani….

  4. Sorry guys who says Pakis do any thing wrong or their way of celebration was not good in todays match, so just looked at how Indianx treated their guest, not a single support and ok if you are not supporting the best ever team Pakistan but show some respect for them in ground, Every one can see how crowd and players were abusing when Stupid Indian team were doing goals.

Please look at yourselves then point fingers on our Pakistani Hockey team. We show ourselves by action ( Winning against host team on their homerground ) not by words just like Indian crowds, media and players used to do always after get badly defeated by Pakistanis by using slang language and words against us..

And itna hi rona hota hai Indian crowd, Team and media ko to rona say bachny kh liya apny country mein tournament nhi krwaya kro plzzzz. Aidin rona kitna roty ho tm log.

BEST OF LUCK PAKISTANI TEAM in Final against GERMANY.

    • No excuse can justify the “pak kind celebrations” – this can not be the norm however hostile the crowd might have been – however India must learn to feel bad due to the loss than the “pak kind celebrations”, mental weakness and lack of will let India lose.

    • support ??? will u guys support india when india plays pak in lahore ?? in other matches pak got hteir support .. u shud clearly watch those matches

  5. Yar Daniyal i am Pakistani and muslim to yar hum kisi k ghar mehmaan bun k gy hain k chiey wo iaat kry na krian wo un ki soch pay depend krta hai but is ka mutlab ya nahi un ko un k ghar ma galian nikalo yar ya islam ma kahin nahi kaha sub kam aik tehzeeb or treeka ma kia hota tou theek tha yar match jeetay pakistani in say zyada khush hai but yakeen karo un ki harkatian daikh kr yar ma sharam k maray afsoos ho raha tha yar kin un parh jahiloon ko bheja hoa hai jo aesi harktian world level pay kr rahy hai yar they should sorry to indians for this act.

  6. Just to add one final note since I just finished reading pak media – it doesn’t harm to reflect on what the world is thinking about pak. I for one supported pak hockey 2nd next to India, but this “pak kind celebrations” would make me re-look at pak hockey differently as a supporter from now on. There seemed venom deep inside the body, and the win let this came out in open.

    • u cant be supporter of Paki, and thank you for saying it for no reason. venom is from ur majority of crowd, accept ur defeat, FIH decided watever happened, and on the graounds that we all know "reaction". we dint forget the burning of stadium , long time back … if u have culture, show it by not breaking pitches.

  7. Why do Indians always cry when ever they are decisively beaten by Pakistan, whether in Cricket or in Hockey. There should be grace in accepting the defeat but when would the Indians learn.

  8. As usual we Indians try to hide our frustration of defeat by Pakistan by making one excuse or the other and place the blame on Pakistan. Open eyes and smell the coffee. Pakistan has shown its superiority over India and lets accept the defeat.

  9. I was at the Kalinga stadium today, there was a lot more that the Pakistani players did than just taking their shirts off. • MR Anubhav i have seen these things many times from indian players in cricket too .so please dont make it an issue .despite of pakistani couch excuse indian media is not ending this issue be a god sports man and learn to accept the defeat too.if indian players do same its celebration and if pakistani players celebrate it seems offensive.

      • I understand. I am sure some people in the crowd would have definitely tried to intimidate the players, though I, personally did not see any. I think only if you were in the stadium would you understand. Also, for the information of all, it is not showing the finger what infuriated most people in the audience. The Pakistani reserve goalkeeper bent down and made a sexual gesture acting as though stroking his private parts at the audience. I really did not want to say this here, but in order to make you appreciate the gravity of the actions, I am forced to. We totally accepted our defeat, clapped and applauded the amazing play showed by Pakistan, there is no doubt about it. The crowd in Bhubaneswar was obviously pro-India but always applauded good Hockey by all teams, even if India lost.

    • Anubhav, this is a game my friend. And we as Pakistanis have also tolerated many gestures, infact "lewd gestures" by indian players also. So keep it chill my friend. Same celebrations from Indian Players would have brought Royalties to them. This is not about the gestures, this is about acceptance of defeat at the very homeland!

  10. every action has reaction.. jab RSS Indian crowd Pakistani players ko maa behn ki galia dega to kia humare players unko is bat p kiss dete …awesome response by Pak
puri bat pta na ho to nai bolte

  11. I believe that Indian fans deserve a middle finger. Their behaviour during this and many other matches is less than perfect. I am quite sure that Indian spectators played their part in getting this responce from players. As far as the apology goes, it is akin to " ja baba, ma'af kar, jaan chad". Well played Pakistan.

    • Come on Omer Burai ka badla burai nahi blky acchaai hoti hy!!! Pak players did a mistake in the heat of the moment. It would be bigger mistake to justify it.

    • I am sure some people in the crowd would have definitely tried to intimidate the players, though I, personally did not see any. I think only if you were in the stadium would you understand. 12. Omer – for a moment I forgot that you are a nation where terrorists are mindwashed/trained, breeded and even worshipped. A very different mindset you have, so you can say that Indian audience deserved middle finger. I am sure you would say world deserved all terror attacks – carry on with your frivolous stuff.

  13. actions should not be so.one must remain a humble person even after becoming a winner.Pakistan team must show high moral ground on every field.

  14. Taking shirts off happens in football all the time. Its just a way of celebrating. And mind you, no one noticed what the Pak team captain said when receiving his award at the post match ceremony – “I thank the (Indian) crowd for the wonderful support!”. I watched the whole game and celebration – yea a couple of players pointed to some in the crowd who were obviously taunting them but as a team, they were just celebrating. Don’t make it a big deal. Listen to the Captain’s words.

  15. There was no need for finger gestures, they are intolerable as a reaction even. For all those Pakistani brothers who are justifying that Pak players did it as a reaction to Indian counterparts its still not acceptable. But indians should also point out themselves as well while objecting pakistani behaviour, they are not innocent. Indians dont have big heart seriously, there was pindrop silence when Pak scored 4th goal. Where was the support? Anyways Pak Captain and Coach has accepted the mistake, now indians should let it go!!! They will have their time in future maybe 🙂

  16. well done Pak team……..mjhe itni zada khushi hui ……no words….india ko india ma haraya….maza a gya…ma ny pura match daikha..indians ma zra b sportsman spirit nae..they are very much biased people..hmara jb b goal hota tha there was complete silence in da crowd…yh sb uci sb ka reaction tha…bt yh koi itni b bari bat nae……

  17. And what about the biased commentary. Whenever india was in the lead the commentators would be saying things like india score because of superior tactics or can India double their lead but when pakistan would lead they start saying things like India should attack for this part or that part or they would say why cant india score Pakistan’s tactics and team is clearly weak etc.who is answerable for that.india had both the crowds and commentators on their side.even the referees were favouring india as their were clearly such situations where they had given penalties without any fault of pakistani defenders (see match again). If you observe the indian crowd right after Pakistan’s victory they started swearing and abusing pakistani players.who is answerable for these acts.what about the expulsion of idian occupied Kashmir’s student who was expelled from indian university because he was celebrating Pakistan’s victory over india in asia cup(cricket). Indians are just sore loser.

    • Neither Ganguly, nor Kohli, nor any Football or Tennis player has ever made a sexual gesture acting to stroke their private parts at the audience, as was done by the Pakistani reserve goalkeeper. There were people with families who were embarrassed and left in bad taste. I was one among them too. Please do not jump to conclusions and make comparisons if you do not know the entire issue.

  18. The display of ethics and manners by the Pakistani Hockey team after winning match from India yesterday was not good . It was very bad both socially and morally in front of so many spectators and was against the spirit of game. The players are ambassadors of the country .Our players were behaving like illustrate people and the head koch was acting in the same way.It showed that the management has not educated them how to behave in case of victory and especially in India. They must watch the other teams display of sense of happiness after winning a match .The management must take notice of it .They should have taken a round of the ground displaying Pakistani flag.It would have created a positive response to the world and for the hockey lovers. We should not be surprised if India bans the entry of hockey team to India in future.

    • Well said Ali….nice to hear a sane voice amid so much biased language.. Fans of most countries cheer the home team and jeer at visiting team especially in India & Pakistan though it may not justified. Players should be counseled as a part of their training to stand up to such situations. Pakistan may have won a well fought victory but the sportsman spirit and the goodwill between the two countries has taken severe beating.

    • Really appreciate your positive intent, Ali. Though against what you have said, I would like to defend your head coach. He was the one who came running and forced the players to stop the antics and apologize. I was at the stadium.

  19. I can understand that showing middle finger is definitely against the spirit of game and does not bring good words to the country but we are looking at only one side of the coin, has anyone seen what Indian crowd were doing throughout the match? And that was the reaction under pressure from Pakistani team. Because all the cameras were on the players and you can not see what crowd was up to. History of all the sports matches India Pakistan in India has shown us some horrible full of hatred crowd sign boards and abusive language in the past and this match was not the exception in this case.

    • @Shoaib…..Agreed….Even if 1 percent of what you say is correct……They are hockey players not normal people coming on stands watching and commenting. When you are famous people will speak against you but that doesnt mean reacting in the same way..

    • do you remember your captain Aamir Sohail showing disrespect to Venkatesh Prasad in cricket 1999 world cup. is it the way sports to be played. complete purpose of playing is lost. Game is played to bring two nations closer . Tell me who first started Sohail or Prasad . Video is available. Win or loss is a part of the game.
Many of Pakistani be the actors or former players are earning & living in India like Akram , Veena Malik etc. Will you allow Indians in your country & provide them security .

So there is no point of playing in bilateral series , if goodwill found missing.
Why not you raise voice to ban export of Pakistani actors & players to India , when you hate India so much.

  20. may be the indian public pushed them to do such actions .because everyone was quite when pakistan won the match

    • Becasuse in India we support our Indian team not opponent team, not a terrorist country who deliberately train terrorist to kill the people in India.

  21. PAKISTANIS the very name explains it all.. Very Good Sportsmanship.. keep it up PAKISTANIS…!!! 😛
